How Toxins Affect Your Body (And How to Detoxify Yourself)

Updated: Nov 25, 2019

The effects of toxins on our health are rarely discussed. Although, in recent times it has become a part of the conversation for many, a lot more awareness is still needed, in particular, today when there are more toxins in the environment than ever.

Often, the core reason behind your fatigue, infection, allergies, weakening bones, mental confusion, and other health issues is the amount of toxins available in your body. While the OTC medications can provide you temporary relief, your body remains far from completely healed, prone to sickness.

Effects of Toxins in Our Bodies

There are many ways how toxins affect our bodies.

  • They damage our digestive tract, kidneys, and livers which hinders organs’ functioning. Sometimes, the organs are so toxic, detoxification becomes quite difficult, which stems into plenty of other problems.

  • The toxins found in pesticides, phthalates and other products that contain benzene damage our DNA. This leads to cell degeneration, which increases the rate of aging. So, you start looking old early than your age.

  • They affect our bone mass, which affects the entire body and its mobility. When toxins enter the body, they take up the outer surface of the bones, displacing the calcium. This weakens our skeletal structures. Moreover, due to bone loss, the amount of toxin increases and then circulates throughout the body.

  • They affect our enzymes, poisoning them. Enzymes are the engines to our bodies that pillar many of our physiological functions. The damaged enzymes hinder the key body functions like the production of hemoglobin in the blood and prevention of damages that speed aging.

  • They interfere in the natural production and functioning of hormones, which then causes hormonal imbalances. This results in several physical and psychological stresses, including you feeling tired, fatigued and anxious.

These are some of the many effects of toxins in our bodies.

So, the obvious next question is how to cleanse our bodies? How to detoxify? Fortunately, the answer isn’t difficult.

Nutritional Means of Eradicating Toxins from Our Bodies

There are many things you can do to remove toxins from your body. Making adjustments in your everyday diet is the simplest one.

The first thing you should do is increase your daily water intake. Water transports the waste in our bodies, removing all the toxins through urination and sweating. So, audit the amount of water you drink every day right away; if it falls short, drink more.

Next, decrease your intake of sugar and processed foods, which has played a big role in the public health crisis of today. They promote obesity and diseases like cancer and diabetes. Such diseases affect the optimal functioning of our organs, which then obstructs our body’s natural ability to detoxify itself. So, stop eating junk food, or at least limit it.

Talking about food, eat more fiber. Organically grown fruits and vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, beets, radishes, artichokes, and seaweed are excellent sources to detoxify your body. There are plenty other detoxing foods that many health and wellness coaches recommend. It includes avocado, dill, collard greens, green tea, lemon, and garlic. So, give your daily diet a hard look and make space to include more of these foods.

Here are a few other nutritional means of eradicating toxins from your body:

  • Take Vitamin C supplements. They help the body produce more glutathione, a liver compound that flushes out toxins.

  • Stress hormone, cortisol, is a toxin that our body produces when put against physical and emotional stress. So, foremost, you might want to reduce your stress level as much as possible. But then that’s not always possible. This is where in-taking more of foods that reduce stress levels can provide you the needed relief. Some of the commons foods that lower stress include blueberries, oatmeal, avocado, seeds, green tea, salmon, turkey, Swiss chard, fatty fish, carrots, yogurts, and dark chocolate.

  • There are several herbs and spices that are known for their antioxidant properties. The likes of turmeric, dandelion, cilantro, red clover, Triphala, milk thistle, neem, and mint are readily available in local market. Include more of them in your recipes.

Of course, there’s much more to toxins, their effects on our body and how to cleanse ourselves. However, for the starters, that’s all you need to know at present.
